Welcome to Townsville Storms
During Cyclone Larry 200306
Tropical Cyclone Larry was one of the most dangerous cyclones to cross the Northern Queensland coast. It was more intense than Cyclone Althea which struck Townsville Christmas 1971. Cyclone Larry crossed the coast over Innisfail approximately 6:30 am Monday the 20th March 2006. Peak wind gusts were reported above 300 Klms/hr. Cyclone Larry was a small cyclone not unlike Cyclone Tracy in Darwin 1974. Cyclonic Winds were felt between the cities of Cairns down to Cardwell. Cyclone Larry Crossed the coast on what is known as a neap tide, so storms surges were not as serious as first thought.
Below are a selection of photos taken in my home town of Townsville. The later photos are taken as I went further north ( into the cyclones path ). I fell short of Innisfail by 10 klms, but experienced the "eye wall" and that was the highlight of my life when it came to chasing weather.
