Welcome to Townsville Storms

Townsville's first dedicated storm site.

news

15 March 2010:  Hello all weather watchers.  Well we've had a pretty dry March so far after what has turned out to be an above average wet season in the north.  It is hard to determine what the rest of our monsoon season has in store.  All interest has now been focusing on Cyclone Ului out near the Solomon Islands.  Computer forecast models are at loggerheads with where and when this cyclone will hit the coast (if at all).  Will keep you posted.

30 January 2010: Well Townsville residents, the wet season has been in full swing over the last week or so.  We have so far received 467mm on an average of 274mm for January.  I have uploaded today's King Tide photos and you can view the under the "Townsville Storms Photo Gallery" section on the menu to the right.  This years king tide was at 4.11m, a little less than last year's 4.28m.  Boundary Street residents again watched as some yards went under.

24 January 2010:  Ex T.C Neville which had been hovering off the F.N.Q coast for days had finally made landfall between Innisfail and Townsville.  There had been some high wind gusts observed at the Airport in the afternoon.  I have taken photos and some video when I went to the strand.  I love the rain, specially when you hear it falling on a tin roof.

05 January 2010:  Website was offline due to Server issues.  We apologise for this interruption.

01 January 2010: Happy new year everyone.  Thanks for supporting this site!

31 December 2009: December was definitely a wet month, most of the rainfall fell on the 31st with 206.4mm registered at Townsville’s Airport. Some suburbs north of the city recorded over 250mm. December 31st’s rainfall event has led to the airport recording its highest 24-hour December rainfall figure for 33 years. Townsville Airport received 207 millimetres of rain, 45 millimetres more than the record set on December 22 in 1976.  Minimum temps were above average, Maximum temperatures were also above average. On a yearly average of 1126.7mm, the total rainfall received for 2009 was 1989.8mm.

28 December 2009:  Rain has fallen in patches around town.  I snapped some nice storm photos today which can be found at Townsville Storms Photo Gallery. It's not much but it's a start.

01 November 2009:  The official start to the cyclone season for 09/10 has started. It's not likely that we will experience anything close to a cyclone before Christmas.  Well, let's hope not anyway.  The experts have tipped a quieter than usual wet season this year due to the strengthening El Nino.

21 - 29 September 2009:  Dust Haze caused by a massive Dust Storm covered the city.  I managed to take some nice shots from Castle Hill.  See Townsville Storms Photo Gallery.

01 September 2009:  Townsville recorded it second driest Winter since records began in 1940 and its warmest Winter on record. Rainfall info:  Winter 2009 recorded a total rainfall of just 0.6mm.  The total recorded rainfall for August was 0.0mm. Rainfall to date for 2009 is 1691.8mm where the average to date is 908.9mm.

16 August 2009: Not much to talk about really.  A few foggy starts and warm days.

09 March 2009:  TOWNSVILLESTORMS TURNS 1 TODAY!

07 March 2009: Townsville spared by the wrath of Hamish. The strongest storm since Larry in 2006.

05 March 2009: Cyclone Hamish sits off the coast as a Category 5 storm.

23 February 2009: Townsville records it's wettest February ever recorded, passes the previous record set back in 1968.

22 February 2009: Target 904mm, will we get there for Townsville?

Steady rain this morning as the clouds began to gather early this morning.  For February so far, 859.6mm of rain has officially been recorded at TSV AP up to 8.34am.  The wettest February on record was in 1968 with 904.2mm recorded.

Will February 2009 be the wettest since weather records began?

16 February 2009: Fixed most pages on the site, visual styles and consistency issues were corrected.

844mm of rain so far for February.

08 February 2009: South Townsville Saltwater Inundation. See photos at Townsville Storms Photo Gallery.  Still raining in Townsville.  So far 633mm has fallen for February.  That nearly eclipses January's total of 664mm!!.  Yes it's a wet February.

06 February 2009:  Went for a drive up to the Ross River Dam.  What an awesome experience to watch so much water flowing over the spillway. The gates where open by 2 metres.  460,000 litres of water a second is amazing to see.

I have taken photos and uploaded to the site.  See Townsville Storms photo Gallery for the pics.

05 February 2009:  TC Ellie Photos are up.  See Townsville Storms Photo Gallery.

Also I have just received my still shot camera back from repairs.  "yippee".  Photos of Townsville Flooding on the 030209 will be up soon.

03 February 2009:  Please send me your favourite photos of the deluge if you have them.

03 February 2009:  A deluge hits the city with 200mm of rain falling overnight.  Plenty of water covering roads and houses are being inundated with flood water.  Townsville, Ingham and Giru are Isolated at present due to the Rain.  Once again I was out on the city streets capturing the deluge and flooding as it happened.  Due to the nature of the weather lately, I have plenty of video footage to edit.  I will upload them soon to Townsville Storms Photo Gallery as soon as I can.

02 February 2009:  When will the rain stop???

01 February 2009:  Cyclone Ellie Forms and crosses the coast near Mission Beach around Midnight of the 02 February.  No reports of damage.  I went out an about today and took video.  I will upload pictures soon.

29 January 2009:  Well hasn't it been a wet month!  So far Townsville has received a total of 557mm on an average of only 268.5mm for January.  The forecast of more rain is highly likely with the onset of the Monsoon by the weekend.  Unfortunately, last Thursday's Storm blew my main PC up so I have had to resort to the Laptop.  To those who have emailed me, I will get to you soon.

Please keep em coming with some photos if you have them, tell your friends about this site too!.

14 January 2009: Monsoonal Rains and strong winds of up to 80klm/hr  have hit Townsville. Heavy rains causing flooding to low lying areas.  King tides also coinciding with the "Big Wet" resulted in Saltwater inundation to areas primarily around South Townsville. Residents along the coast also reported severe beach erosion.  It only January, the wet season is far from over. Many irresponsible drivers also came to grief in some know flood prone areas such as Blakeys Crossing and Bohle River at Shaws Road.  Please remember to take extra precautions specially in rainy conditions.

10 January 2009: Townsville Skycam seems to be fine in it's position.  This will be a permanent position. Thanks to all who have emailed their thoughts.  All were positive.

03 January 2009:  Townsville Skycam is now at it's new location.  sitting in a test position.  If has a clear view, I will leave it there. Please contact me with your thoughts about the Cam's View.

01 January 2009: Happy New Year.

25 December 2008: Merry Christmas to all.

18 December 2008:  Thank you to those who have submitted their photos to me.  I have been busy lately but I promise you will have the photos posted this week.

17 December 2008: TOWNSVILLE SKYCAM IS MOVING.  Most likely date will be the 30 December 2008.  During this time there will be offline periods.  We do apologise for the inconvenience but should resume as a soon as possible

14 December 2008: A Severe storm swept in from the West over Townsville Sunday afternoon.  The storm produced up to 80 km/hr wind gusts and in some areas, brought down trees.  800 lightning strikes were recorded.  Video has been edited and soon will be uploaded.  I have decided to introduce a dedicated video footage page.

08 December 2008: A massive storm went through from around 5am.  1400 lighting strikes were recorded in the city area alone.  Major power disruptions caused 18000 homes to lose power. Torrential rain flooded homes, power poles long with trees were downed due to high winds. It is said that some of the transformers are that badly hit by lightning will need to be replaced. Video Here

01 December 2008: Predictions are for a very active monsoon season this year

27 November 2008: Severe Storms caused havoc in the city from lunch time.  One Storm caused major inundation at Stockland and surrounding areas were also flooded.  The Shopping complex was evacuated.  Businesses also lost power at Aitkenvale. Direct lightning strikes causes transformers to blow and cut power.  Accidents and traffic chaos occurred on Nathan Street and Ross River Road.

01 August 2008:
Summary for July 2008 and Y.T.D.  Location Townsville Australia

The pendulum swung the other way for July.  It was a dry start to the month until an upper level trough came through around the 23rd July.  An offshore low developed and was responsible for some strong winds in coastal areas.

July’s rainfall exceeded the average by 82.3mm!!  A stark contrast to the last few months.

There was relief in sight from the 15 July when the rain started.  The whole region resembles a “wet season” green look.  There was some localised flooding around the area and I even managed to take some photos.

Due to clear skies for the majority of July, maximum temperatures were below average with 24.4, where historically July averages 25.1.
Minimum temps were above average with 14.1, where historically July averages 13.6 see below for details.

July is officially the coldest part of the year for Townsville.
